iPhone 18 Pro Max: Everything Apple Confirmed at the September Event

Apple held its autumn event on 9 September 2026, and the headline product was the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Pre-orders opened three days later, on 12 September at 5am Pacific. The phone goes on sale 18 September in more than 65 countries and regions, with another wave of countries following on 25 September.

So the wait is short. If you were hoping for a surprise, though, there wasn’t much of one. This is a chip year, not a redesign year.

Here’s what Apple actually confirmed on stage, and nothing beyond it.

Pricing went up by $100 across the Pro line

The iPhone 18 Pro now starts at $1,199. Last year the 17 Pro started at $1,099. The Pro Max starts at $1,299, up from $1,199 for the 17 Pro Max. That’s a flat $100 increase on both models, and Apple didn’t dress it up or bury it in a footnote.

Whether that lands well depends entirely on how you feel about the rest of the package. A hundred dollars is a hundred dollars. For some people that’s the difference between upgrading this cycle and holding on another year. For others it disappears into a 36-month carrier bill and barely registers.

What’s notable is that the increase applies to the base configuration. Apple did not, as far as the event showed, shuffle the storage tiers around to soften the blow. The entry price simply moved.

Storage now runs all the way to 2TB

You get four options: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. The 2TB tier is new for the Pro line, and it’s the first time Apple has offered that much space on an iPhone.

Most people do not need 2TB in a phone. Let’s be honest about that. But if you shoot a lot of video at high bitrates, or you’re the sort of person who keeps every photo locally because you don’t trust the cloud, it removes a ceiling that used to force awkward decisions. It also, conveniently, gives Apple a higher price point to sell into.

The A20 Pro is the real story

The chip inside the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the A20 Pro, and it’s built on a 2nm process. That’s the headline number, and it’s the one Apple spent the most time on.

The configuration is a six-core CPU and a seven-core GPU, paired with a dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple says memory bandwidth is up 50 percent, and that sustained performance improves by up to 40 percent.

That word “sustained” matters more than the raw peak figure. Phones have been fast in short bursts for years. Where they fall down is the tenth minute of a game, or the middle of a long video export, when heat forces the chip to throttle back. A 40 percent improvement in sustained performance, if it holds up outside Apple’s own testing, is the kind of thing you feel during actual use rather than in a benchmark screenshot.

Apple gave no benchmark scores at the event, and I’m not going to invent any. We’ll know more when independent testing arrives.

The displays did not change at all

The Pro stays at 6.3 inches. The Pro Max stays at 6.9 inches. Both are Super Retina XDR OLED panels with 120Hz ProMotion, exactly as they were last year.

No new sizes, no new panel technology, no change to the refresh rate. If you have a 17 Pro sitting in front of you, the screen on the iPhone 18 Pro Max will look familiar because it is, in the ways that matter, the same screen at the same size.

That’s not automatically a criticism. Those panels were already excellent. But anyone upgrading specifically for a better display is going to be disappointed, and it’s better to know that now.

A variable aperture on the main camera

This is the most interesting hardware change that isn’t the chip. The 48MP Fusion Main camera now has a variable aperture, adjustable from ƒ/1.48 all the way down to ƒ/4. Apple says low-light performance is roughly 50 percent better.

Variable aperture is a genuinely unusual thing to put in a phone. Most phone cameras have a fixed opening and simulate depth-of-field effects in software. Being able to physically stop the lens down to ƒ/4 gives you real optical control over depth of field, and opening up to ƒ/1.48 pulls in more light when there isn’t much to work with.

All three rear cameras are 48MP this year. That uniformity matters for consistency: switching between lenses mid-shoot shouldn’t produce the resolution mismatch that older multi-camera systems had.

Same body, four colours, slightly heavier

The aluminium unibody design carries over unchanged from the iPhone 17 Pro. Same construction, same basic shape.

The colours are Burgundy, Glacier, Silver and Black. Burgundy is the one people will argue about. Glacier is the quiet one that will probably sell better than anyone expects.

Both models are slightly heavier than last year’s. Apple didn’t make a thing of it on stage, and in daily use a small weight change is the sort of difference you notice for about a week and then forget entirely. Still, if you’re the kind of person who tracks grams, it’s there.

Should you buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max?

Depends what you’re coming from. And what you actually do with a phone.

If you’re on a 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max, the case is thin. The display is identical, the body is the same, and you’d be paying $100 more than you did last year for a faster chip and a smarter main camera. That’s a real upgrade, but it’s an incremental one, and a year-old Pro is still a very capable phone.

If you’re two or three generations back, it’s a different conversation. The jump in sustained performance, the variable aperture, the 2TB option at the top end: stacked together, those add up to something worth paying for. And if you shoot a lot in low light, the camera change alone might carry the decision.

The 2TB tier is a niche buy. Be honest with yourself about your actual storage use before you pay for it, because that’s an expensive way to store photos you’ll never open again.
